I have a hard time reminding Barb that dolls from the 80s can be considered older. Here's a secret, she actually played with Vintage Barbies when she was little and even brushed their ponytails! ---Sleeping Beauty

1978 Sun Lovin' Malibu Ken
This is Mattel's 1978 Sun Lovin' Malibu Ken, a little worse for the wear but almost all of 30 years old. His molded blond hair is parted in a style that looks combed from right to left, It has a few scuff marks as do his eyebrows. His blue painted eyes fairly sparkle along with his wide life saver grin. His smile shows off white teeth that either have a bit of pink paint on them or rubbed off of them. The paint in the brief area that indicates tan lines at his waist and upper thighs is well scuffed, which is usual with all Malibu dolls from the era. He has a bit of damage to the fingertips of his right hand; I've tried to show it in the scan linked to his portrait picture. His waist is straight with slightly defined abdominal muscles and chest, straight arms with palms to the rear, bending legs and flat feet. Both knees bend and hold their bend though one is looser than the other. While this doll is not in excellent condition, he could be displayable and he is a Malibu doll from a significant period in Mattel's fashion doll history. This doll is also listed on my Male Dolls page. $3.00

This is 1978 Sun Lovin Malibu Barbie with real tan lines under her aqua, two-piece bikini. She has some paint rubs on her breasts under her top but otherwise she is in very nice condition. Besides her swimsuit, she comes with her beach bag and sunglasses. Sun Lovin has soft, straight, sun-bleached blond hair that falls to her midback. She has straight arms with palms to the rear, a twist waist, bend legs and high-heeled feet. She was not made to wear earrings or ring so there are no holes. This doll is also listed on the Super Star doll page. $12.00

Mary Make Up, friend of Kenner's Tressy.
This 11½" doll is Mary Makeup, a friend of Kenner's Tressy doll. Where Tressy was created for hair play, Mary Makeup was created for cosmetic play. That is why her face is so pale. This lightweight vinyl doll has a straight waist, straight and unbending arms and undbending legs with high heeled feet. Her yellow blond bubble cut hair style is rooted with a strong saran fiber. She has some chipped paint in one eye and he lip color is very pale. She is nude. $5.00

Mary Make Up, friend of Kenner's Tressy.
This pale faced, yellow blond lassie is Kenner's Mary Make Up, a friend of Tressy's from the late 1960's. She is 11½" tall, with rooted Saran hair that is thick and strong and styled like the vintage Mattel Bubble cut Barbie's. She has a straight waist and unbending legs and arms. Her feet are tiny and high heeled and she is a lighter weight doll than Tressy or Mattel's Barbie. Her face paint is very pale because she was created for cosmetic play. She is in excellent condition and nude. $6.00

Early Maddie Mod by Mego 1970.
This unusual doll is an early Maddie Mod marked "Mego Corp MCMLXX (1970)/Hong Kong" on her back. She has a rooted bubble cut hair style with a long hank of hair at the crown of her head that naturally swirls into a possible beehive style or, if pulled down, it might make a short flip. It looks like Mego was trying to cover all the hair style bases in a transitional fashion era. She has real eyelashes on a painted face complete with dimples. Her body has a slant twist waist, straight arms, straight legs and tiny high heeled feet. Her vinyl is lightweight compared to Barbie or other fashion dolls. She is in excellent condition and nude. $10.00

Tammy-like doll by Horseman
Horseman's Mary Poppins. She carries Horseman's "H" marking under her hairline at the back of her head. Her hair is rooted along her part line and around her hair line but not in the center. Still, she has a lot of hair and it is very long. Mary Poppins hair would be parted in the middle, pulled down and drawn to the back of her hair in a large bun. On this doll, because her hair is loose it forms an attractive widows peak at the center part. Her legs are straight; her face painting is very pretty. She is very much like an Ideal Tammy doll and Horseman's Patty Duke. She is in excellent condition. - nude.
Thanks to Eric for positively identifying this doll.

1971 Cynthia by Mattel
This is Cynthia, a 17½" tall talking doll made by Mattel in 1971. She has a bigger and more youthful body structure than Super Size Barbie but you'll see similarities in her face paint and long, blond Saran hair. Her arms and legs are straight and do not bend though they do move back and forth. Her head moves side to side but not back and forth (up and down). She has a slot in her side that takes a small two-inch record that plays on both sides. This Cynthia's record is titled "Outdoor Activities." The record is in excellent condition on one side but scratched on the other. She runs on one D volt battery. The battery compartment can be seen in the picture linked to her portrait. It is clean with no batteries having ever exploded in it. While she talked when I received her and she has only been on display in my own collection, she won't talk now, even with a fresh battery. The push button on her back, I'm pretty sure, was painted black by one of her previous playmates. It is neatly done and does not detract from her appearance as it is on her back and under her dress. Cynthia's original short, pink, cotton dress is embellished with blue and green floral ribbon. It can also be seen in the picture linked to her portrait. The dress is in very good but not excellent condition as the pink fabric has faded in some places. It is not obvious, though. Half of the top snap on the back closure is missing. She does not have shoes. This is a really nice and unusual doll that would be a nice addition to any Mattel or talking doll collection. $40.00

Older Dress Me doll with knitted suit and white high heels.
This inexpensive older doll is from my collection. I always thought she was so unusual with her highly molded hair and big blue glass eyes. She is simply a dress me doll, probably from the 50's or 60's, and though the brown knitted shorts suit and high-heels that she came in are excellent, I always thought she would look great in a 1950's suit or even a June Cleaver full-skirted dress and pearls. Her neck, arms and legs twist but do not bend. Her waist is straight and does not turn. The fingers of her hands are attached to each other mitten style with red nails. Her white vinyl shoes are 1¾" long with high heels and a raised molded flower embellishment on the toe. While she is in excellent condition, her vinyl is thin because she is an inexpensive doll and her color is pale. A repaint and redress would really make her a lovely and unusual period doll. $3.00

14R-Like Doll
This 18-1/2" tall doll is not marked but is very similar to the 14R dolls. She is jointed at her neck, shoulders and hips, has high-heeled feet and separated fingers. Her green sleep eyes are fringed on the upper lids with real black lashes while painted lashes are on the lower lids. A pretty rose bud mouth in red, nail polish to match and dark brunette shag cut complete her period look. Her rooted hair is not quality and though short, it is ample. Her head could be removed for rerooting. Her body is a pale flesh colored light in weight. She is in Excellent condition. - nude. $10.00
